Students…Explore Healthcare Careers by Shadowing Working Healthcare Professionals

If you’re still in high school and you want to get an idea of what a day in the life of a doctor, physician’s assistant or nurse is like, you might want to look into Central Iowa’s Area Health Education Center (AHEC). It gives students an opportunity to learn from local healthcare professionals by shadowing them during a typical workday.

AHEC’s innovative program is called The Scope, a monthly web series that introduces students to a variety of health careers. Students who participate in The Scope can explore different healthcare careers through interviews with area practitioners who share their stories and provide valuable insights into the medical profession.

The series equips pre-health professional students with the knowledge, skills and experience that can help them reach their professional healthcare career goals. In addition to shadowing healthcare providers at work, AHEC also provides "real world" experiences as students interact one-on-one with working healthcare professionals. Students are also exposed to diverse populations in their daily “rounds.”

In addition, AHEC helps students coordinate volunteer positions, internships, research/independent study and the opportunity to hone their job interviewing skills with working healthcare professionals.

If you’re interested in AHEC’s job shadow experiences, you can fill out the Student Job Shadow Application or if you're interested in an internship, fill out the Student Internship Application and return it to Amy Smith, Central Iowa AHEC, 1801 Hickman Road, Des Moines, IA 50314 or you may fax it to 515-282-3893.
