Interview No-No's

Your interview day has finally come. You’ve had it on the calendar for several weeks now and knew this day was coming but you have had other things on your mind. Well it is too late for a full preparation now but just make sure that you don’t compound this issue by doing any of the following no-no’s:

1. Appearance –not putting your best foot forward! Sounds silly to even mention it but I have seen job candidates come in for an interview dressed like they were going to this big social function (overkill) and I have seen candidates come in dressed like they are going to a hoedown! A safe rule of thumb is business style dress.

2. Arriving late. Again it seems like everyone would know to arrive on time but it happens time and time again. Think how you feel when you have to wait for someone. It’s irritating, isn’t it? Well you can bet yours is not the only interview scheduled and by arriving late you could mess up everyone else’s schedule. Not to mention that you just drastically lessened your chances of being hired.

3. Job position ignorance. Sure you knew the job qualifications when you applied for it but that was a long time ago and you have applied for a hundred other positions since. I urge you to at least take the time to go over the position description prior to the interview. Remember in school when you weren’t prepared for a pop-quiz? Remember how you felt? Well magnify that by 1000!

4. Not knowing anything about the company. So you didn’t have time to do a full prep for this interview but please take five minutes to review the company’s website! You wouldn’t buy a car without at least looking under the hood so why would you consider a position for a company that you don’t know anything about?

The economy is bad; unemployment rate continues to rise; Republicans and Democrats continue to fight and there doesn’t seem to be an end to any of this madness. If you are blessed enough to have an interview and a chance at a job, for heaven sakes do it right!
